“You punch like a girl” used to be an insult. Perhaps to some it still is, yet thanks to Jennifer Lawrence’s leading performance in the new psychological thriller Red Sparrow, the expression has likely met its demise.
Yes, the Oscar-winning actress already had solid blockbuster credentials to her name via the X-Men and Hunger Games franchises, but – compared to her latest character Dominika Egorova (a prima-ballerina turned Soviet assassin) – Katniss and Mystique seem more like pacifist missionaries than dangerous killers.
Sensual, lethal and deeply conflicted, Red Sparrow showcases Lawrence as you’ve never seen her before; and whilst it marks a bold and exciting evolution for the talented young actress, so too can history’s class of female leads claim another important step towards parity (and perhaps even dominance) in the traditionally testosterone-fuelled genres.
